The ‘Made in France,’ increasingly important for the consumer

Thursday, 09 February 2023 / Published in Unclassified

The movement isn’t new, but the trend has intensified with the coronavirus crisis. According to an Opinion Way survey, 64% of French people claim to have increased their consumption of French products since the Covid outbreak.

Becoming a purchasing lever, the ‘Made in France’ label is displayed on many products. Why is it important to consider this when choosing your packaging?

Consumers Attracted to ‘Made in France’

For several years now, the origin of products no longer leaves consumers indifferent. According to an Ifop survey, more than 7 out of 10 French people are willing to pay more to buy a product ‘made in France.’ Leading motivations cited include a desire to support local businesses or to perform a ‘useful act.’ More than just a passing trend, ‘Made in France’ reflects a change in mentality, which you would do well to consider as a retailer.

Why Associate Your Brand with ‘Made in France’?

Textile, automotive, agri-food, or furniture sectors… Regardless of the industry, many companies have chosen to manufacture in France or even relocate their production. It must be said that the advantages are numerous. By producing locally, you not only help support employment, know-how, and the country’s industrial heritage, but you also reduce the environmental impact of your products compared to those manufactured halfway around the world.
You are directly addressing consumers’ current concerns, both in terms of quality and sustainability. With supporting certifications! As a result, your brand image is enhanced, giving you a significant competitive advantage.

Which Labels to Trust?

In France, a multitude of certifications exist to attest to a product’s sustainable and local qualities. Among the most reputable:

  • Some private labels – such as ‘Origine France Garantie’ and ‘Imprim’Vert’ – issued by private organizations that impose rigorous obtaining conditions;
  • National labels – ‘Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (EPV),’ ‘Indications Géographiques’ (IG), and ‘Indications Géographiques Protégées’ (IGP) – in the agricultural and food sectors;
  • The ‘Made in France’ or ‘Fabriqué en France’ label, voluntarily affixed by companies to their products if they meet the conditions set by the General Directorate of Customs.

But beware of misleading markings! Unlike the ‘Origine France Garantie’ label, for example, others like ‘conçu en France’ (designed in France), ‘élaboré en France’ (developed in France), or even ‘artisanat français’ (French craftsmanship) do not guarantee that the product was actually manufactured in France.

Packaging Made in France Too

Do you want to strengthen your brand image with French conscious consumers? Be consistent down to the smallest details and favor eco-friendly packaging made in France! For example, at Creastyl, we have long been committed to ‘Made in France.’ Our ‘Origine France Garantie’ label has been awarded since 2016.
