The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015 by over 190 signatory countries, aims to limit global warming to 2°C. To achieve this goal, decarbonization is necessary, and businesses have a significant role to play in the process.
Decarbonization of Businesses, a Vital Movement
Decarbonization… In other words, reducing greenhouse gas production. In France, the industry has a significant role to play in this regard. It alone represents nearly 20% of these emissions: over 80 MtCO2eq (million tons of CO2 equivalent) annually in total, with a target of 16 MtCO2eq by 2050. In 25 years, it will be necessary to **reduce CO2 emissions by a factor of 5**!
The problem? Only 59% of French companies – compared to 83% in Spain – are currently committed to a carbon neutrality plan, most of them without being sure they can achieve their goals, according to Accenture.
Key Actions for Decarbonization
Numerous initiatives allow manufacturers to contribute to decarbonization in France. Among them:
- Installing more efficient equipment to **reduce energy losses** and increase productivity;
- Undertaking energy-efficient building renovations to **minimize heating and cooling**;
- **Recovering waste heat** (or lost heat), especially in companies working with very high or very low temperatures;
- Replacing fossil fuels (oil, gas, and coal) with **green energy sources** like wind, solar, or biomass;
- Promoting bio-based and/or biodegradable raw materials and encouraging recycling.
Creastyl
Conducting a **Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory** (BEGES) is **mandatory only for companies with more than 500 employees**. Nevertheless, all companies, regardless of their size, have an interest in decarbonizing and partnering with virtuous entities in this matter. First, because our quality of life depends on it; second, because regulations are likely to become increasingly stringent; and finally, because their image and, therefore, their value will depend on it more and more in the years to come.
At Creastyl, this is the choice we have made for many years. LED lighting has been installed throughout the factory; a new boiler and photovoltaic panels have been put in place; our production of twisted handle bags has been relocated, and more. As a result, with just this last accomplishment, our greenhouse gas emissions have decreased by 26 tonnes.
